Energy Savings 2004

Weatherstripping your home has always been about two things 1 comfort 2- energy savings. The more important of the two is comfort. No one wants to be at home in the winter and feel cold air coming in around a door or a window. We all want to be as comfortable as possible. Plugging that leak, by either using Foam Tapes, Gaskets, Caulks or putting Shrink or Stretch Window kits on the windows will drastically reduce drafts and make our life pleasant at home.

The energy savings become an added bonus to our comfort.

By adding Shrink Window Kits to the average single pane window increases its efficiency by approximately 85%. If the average home shrank its 10 windows (we are talking about an average size home) a family would normally save approximately 23% on their heating bill during an average winter.

By sealing cracks around windows and doors using Foam Tapes, Gaskets, Caulks (depending on the size of the crack) you can save an average of approximately 15% on a normal heating bill.

One of the most surprising energy saving items when you weatherstrip your home, is Socket Sealers. By sealing every single socket and switch in the average home, a homeowner can save approximately 10% year round on their energy bills.

A lot of heating and cooling is lost into the interior walls of a home because of leaks through outlets and switches.

Another area overlooked by homeowners is the doors (especially the bottom of the door). Not just the front door, but the back door patio doors, and doors leading to basements and into the garage. By making sure there are no leaks coming in from any of these doors, a homeowner can save another 5%-10% on your overall energy bill. Door Sweeps, Door Bottoms and Thresholds help make a tight seal for door bottoms. Again remember that doors leading to the basement out to an unheated garage can be a significant source of energy loss.

One other important item in the home that really needs attention for energy savings is the water heater. By using a Water Heater Blanket, the average homeowner can turn down the temperature of the water heater (it is not called a hot water heater because if the water was already hot, why would it need to be heated) and save an average of $10-$20 per month.

Remember that Energy savings will vary by home, by family, and by areas of the country. These figures are an average and represent the average household.
